5 Myths & Facts About Sagging Breasts According to Health.com

iStock_000025227082_XXXLargeMost women would love to know all of the secret tips and tricks to keeping their breasts perky, youthful, and gravity-resistant. Unfortunately, much of the information circulating is false. Health.com recently addressed five of the most common assumptions about sagging breasts in an effort to separate fact from fiction.

The article emphasizes one key fact: breasts will droop as you get older, due to stretching of the Cooper’s ligaments (the connective tissue that supports the structure of the breast). As we age, collagen and elastin break down—and your breast tissue is no exception. This is why most preventative measures and do-it-yourself fixes, such as wearing a bra around the clock or doing special exercises, don’t produce substantial results.

But age isn’t the only factor. According to Health.com, many women believe breastfeeding is the culprit behind post-baby breast sagging. However, the breast changes new mothers experience are in fact the result of an increase, and subsequent decrease, in breast size during pregnancy. Similarly, weight fluctuations also can result in excess skin, drooping, and downward-facing nipples.

The good news is that there are some bad habits you can avoid to prevent increased risk for breast drooping. Smoking, suntanning, and eating a nutrient-poor, high-fat diet can all significantly break down your skin’s collagen and lead to more sagging sooner.

Though breast sagging may be inevitable, if it is affecting your confidence, you don’t have to live with the issue. Breast enhancement procedures—such as breast lift surgery, breast augmentation, or a combination of both—can restore a youthful shape and firmness to your breasts, provide an improved breast profile, and minimized stretched, excess skin.
