Scar Healing Instructions

During the acute scar healing phase, we have found that you can lessen the scar formation by giving careful attention to frequent massage. You should start massage treatments two (2) weeks after your surgery. Massage the area several times a day (as much as 10–20) for optimal results. As long as you continue this frequent massaging, your scar will improve for 12–18 months after your cosmetic surgery.

Wounds generally heal better in a moist environment. We recommend that you apply cocoa butter to the area a couple times a day. It is a good way to soften the scar.

Sun exposure delivers harmful UV radiation, which can dry and prematurely age your skin. This is especially harmful during the acute scar healing phase after your surgery. You should follow the recommendations of the American Cancer Society and avoid the sun as much as possible. If you must go out, avoid the sun during the peak hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., wear a protective hat and clothing, and use waterproof sun block with a SPF of 30 or higher (or frequently re-apply it), especially if you are exercising or swimming.

Twenty minutes on a tanning bed radiates your scar with the equivalent of eight hours of sun. This kind of exposure will result in poor scarring, premature aging of your skin, and quite possibly SKIN CANCER.

Healing scars are usually red and puffy during the first few weeks after surgery. But scars mature and improve with time. Scars gradually fade for the first 12–18 months after your Hagerstown cosmetic surgery, provided you follow the instructions listed on this page. Don't forget to massage your scar!
