PRP for Hair Restoration
Maryland Hair Loss Treatment
Treat baldness & restore fuller, thicker hair with PRP injections
Hereditary or age-related hair loss is extremely common, affecting nearly 85% of men in the U.S. by the time they reach age 55. It’s far from a men’s issue, either—according to the American Hair Loss Association, up to 40% of hair loss sufferers are women. Even so, losing your hair can be a distressing experience that you may feel you have little control over.
If you are bothered by thinning hair, we can help. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Garazo and his staff are excited to now offer PRP Hair Restoration injections, an advanced option to treat hair loss without surgery or downtime.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for “platelet rich plasma.” Platelets are tiny disc-like cells in our blood that contain a very high concentration of growth factors, which are powerhouse proteins that assist with cell growth, regeneration, and healing. With PRP, an experienced plastic surgeon can separate out platelets and plasma (the liquid component of blood) from other blood cells and inject them into specific locations to trigger cell regeneration.
How can PRP help regrow hair?
One job that platelet growth factors do very well is stimulate hair follicle growth. When injected into thinning areas of the scalp, PRP helps hair follicles stay in the growth phase longer. This essentially helps you get more hair in an area by allowing new hair growth to “catch up” or even get ahead of hairs that are falling out. When performed by an experienced provider, PRP injections can help:
- Replenish thinning hair along the temples
- Reduce visible male pattern baldness
- Treat early stages of hair loss for women and men
- Improve circulation to the scalp to encourage healthy hair growth
While PRP is a relatively new option in cosmetic medicine, clinical studies have shown its safety and effectiveness as a hair regrowth treatment.

Benefits of PRP vs. hair transplants
For patients experiencing early stages of hair loss or hair thinning, PRP treatments can be an excellent solution to help replenish hair thickness and slow further hair loss. As a quick, non-surgical treatment, PRP offers many advantages for the right patient:
- Non-surgical treatment with no scars
- No downtime is needed
- Treatments usually take 30 minutes or less (compared to several hours for transplant treatments)
- Side effects are minimal—mild tenderness and redness at the injection site are most common; serious side effects are extremely rare when injections are administered by a qualified physician
Am I a good candidate for PRP?
PRP is best suited to individuals experiencing early stages of hair loss. Because it stimulates growth of existing hair follicles but cannot revive dead follicles, it will not be as effective for patients with very large bald spots.
PRP is safe for all skin and hair types, and because your own blood is used, there is no risk of allergic reaction to treatment. Dr. Garazo can help you determine whether PRP is a good option for you during a complimentary consultation.
What to expect from treatment
Dr. Garazo and his staff perform PRP treatments in our office at Plastic Surgery Services. We begin by drawing blood from your arm, just like you might experience when getting blood drawn for routine lab work. The blood sample is transferred to a special tube and placed in a centrifuge, which separates the platelets and plasma from red and white blood cells and other matter. This platelet-rich plasma is then transferred back to a syringe, and small amounts of PRP are injected into precise locations on the scalp.
Treatments typically take about 30 minutes, and we will apply a numbing agent to your scalp before treatment to keep you as comfortable as possible. Following treatment, you can return to your normal routine. You may experience some tenderness and redness at the injection sites for a few days after treatment.
When will I see results with PRP? How long do they last?
Growing new hair takes a little time. Everyone is different, but patients typically notice improvements in hair fullness within 3 to 5 months after PRP injections. Results can last up to 6 months or longer before patients notice the area thinning again; treatment can be repeated every few months or as desired to maintain results.
