Types of Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck techniques are selected based on the degree of correction needed and the results you want to achieve. Dr. Garazo offers multiple approaches to address different abdominal concerns, each designed to restore a flatter, more contoured midsection in a natural-looking way.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full or standard tummy tuck can remove a significant amount of skin and fat and tighten the muscles across the entire abdominal wall. This technique uses two incisions, a horizontal incision between the hip bones and around the navel.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck focuses on the area below the navel and involves a shorter incision just above the pubic area.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck is a lesser used technique but may be ideal for patients with excess skin and fat that extends around the hips (flanks) and lower back. This technique uses a longer incision that wraps around the hips and an incision at the navel.

Overview of the Procedure

Dr. Garazo guides every patient through a structured process designed to maximize results and support a smooth recovery. Here is what you can expect from your first appointment through your return to normal activity.

Tummy Tuck Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Garazo reviews your medical history, evaluates your abdominal anatomy, discusses your aesthetic goals, and presents before-and-after photos. He will then provide a personalized tummy tuck treatment plan tailored to your objectives.

Pre-Surgery Preparation

Before your procedure, you will be asked to stop smoking, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for at least two weeks, and arrange for a trusted adult to drive you home and help during early recovery.

Day of Surgery

Dr. Garazo performs tummy tuck surgery under general anesthesia, carefully making incisions to lift, reposition, and tighten underlying abdominal tissues. Surgery typically takes one to five hours depending on the technique used.

Overnight Suite & Night Nurse

All tummy tuck patients receive a king hotel suite and private overnight nurse included in their price quote. You'll have medically supervised, comfortable first-night recovery at no extra cost.

Follow-Up Appointments

Post-operative visits allow Dr. Garazo to monitor your healing, address any concerns, and clear you for increased activity as you progress through recovery.

Social Readiness

Most patients take one to two weeks off work and avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks. Short gentle walks from the day after surgery promote circulation and faster healing.

Ideal CandidatesFor a Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are commonly chosen by men and women who want to restore a flatter, more toned abdomen after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging. The best candidates are at or near their ideal weight, in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations.

A tummy tuck may be right for you if you are concerned about:

  • Excess skin and fat in the abdominal area that doesn't respond to diet and exercise.
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging.
  • Good overall health with realistic expectations about surgical outcomes.
  • Non-smokers or those willing to quit before and after surgery.
  • At or near their ideal weight before undergoing surgery.
  • Not planning future pregnancies, as this may affect long-term results.

A tummy tuck addresses several common signs of abdominal aging and body changes.

Excess Skin and Fat

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat and tightens the abdominal muscles, resulting in a flatter and more toned stomach.

Weakened Abdominal Muscles

Pregnancy, significant weight changes, and aging can cause the abdominal muscles to separate or weaken. A tummy tuck tightens these muscles, restoring core support and improving the overall contour of the abdomen.

Stretch Marks

By removing skin from the lower abdomen, a tummy tuck can also reduce the number of visible stretch marks in this area.

Immediately following your tummy tuck surgery, your incisions will be covered by dressings and bandages. You will also be wrapped in a tight compression garment to reduce swelling and support your abdomen as it heals. As you recover, it is very important that you follow all post-op instructions, including wearing the garment and caring for your incisions and bandages. Most patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for at least four to six weeks; however, short gentle walks beginning the day after surgery will help keep your blood circulating to promote faster healing. Many patients take one to two weeks off work, depending on their job requirements.

A tummy tuck offers several lasting advantages over non-surgical alternatives.

Flatter, More Toned Abdomen

By lifting and repositioning deeper tissues, a tummy tuck smooths abdominal sagging and removes excess skin, restoring a flatter, more contoured midsection while maintaining a natural appearance.

Long-Lasting Rejuvenation

Unlike non-surgical treatments that provide temporary results, a tummy tuck addresses the underlying causes of abdominal laxity. Many patients enjoy lasting benefits that can endure for years, depending on lifestyle and weight stability.

Natural-Looking Results

When performed with contemporary techniques, a tummy tuck avoids an overly tight or unnatural look. Instead, it creates subtle, harmonious improvements that reflect a healthier, more confident version of how you feel.

Correction of Ventral Hernias

A tummy tuck can also repair ventral hernias by restoring weakened or separated muscles to their original condition, preventing hernia recurrence.

All surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, which Dr. Garazo discusses thoroughly during your consultation.

Bleeding and Infection

As with any surgery, there is a small risk of bleeding or infection. Dr. Garazo minimizes these risks through careful surgical technique and thorough pre-operative screening.

Temporary Numbness

Sensation changes around the abdomen are common early in recovery. In most cases, numbness resolves gradually as nerves heal, although some areas may take longer to fully recover.

Scarring

Yes, scars are inevitable, but Dr. Garazo is trained to precisely suture incisions so they heal as thin as possible. The primary tummy tuck scar is placed low and can be easily concealed by a swimsuit or underwear.

Tummy TuckFAQs

Is an overnight nurse included?

Yes. All tummy tuck patients have a private overnight nurse scheduled for them as part of their price quote, at no additional cost. Your nurse will monitor your recovery, manage any discomfort, and ensure you have a safe and comfortable first night after surgery.

Is a hotel suite included?

Yes. Every tummy tuck patient receives a king hotel suite included in their price quote. Rather than going straight home after surgery, you'll recover in comfort for your first night in a private suite with your overnight nurse present.

Will I need help at home during my recovery?

Yes. For the first few days following your surgery, you will need someone to drive you and assist with basic daily tasks. We recommend arranging for a trusted friend or family member to stay with you for at least the first 24 to 48 hours after your procedure.

Can a tummy tuck help with stretch marks?

A tummy tuck can reduce the appearance of stretch marks located on the skin that is removed during surgery, typically below the navel. Stretch marks above the navel or outside the surgical area will not be affected by the procedure.

Will there be scars after a tummy tuck?

Yes, scars are inevitable, but Dr. Garazo is trained to precisely suture incisions so they heal as thin as possible. The primary tummy tuck scar is placed low and can be concealed by a swimsuit or underwear. Most scars fade significantly over time.

Is a tummy tuck a weight loss procedure?

No. A tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss surgery. It is best suited for patients who are near their ideal weight but have excess skin or muscle laxity that does not respond to diet and exercise.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?

Women who are planning a pregnancy in the near future should postpone their tummy tuck until after they are done having children.

How long do I wear a compression garment?

Most patients wear a compression garment for four to six weeks following surgery. Dr. Garazo will provide specific instructions based on your recovery progress and will advise when it is safe to stop wearing it.

What activities should I avoid in recovery?

Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. Short gentle walks are encouraged from the day after surgery to promote circulation. Dr. Garazo will clear you for additional activities at your follow-up appointments.

Will a tummy tuck affect my belly button?

In most cases, the belly button is repositioned during a full tummy tuck. Dr. Garazo takes great care to ensure a natural-looking result. The belly button is not removed — it is detached, repositioned, and re-sutured through a small incision.

How does a tummy tuck differ from liposuction?

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles, while liposuction targets stubborn fat deposits but does not address skin laxity or muscle separation. The two procedures are often combined for more comprehensive results.

When can I return to work after a tummy tuck?

Many patients take 1-2 weeks off work, depending on the nature of their job.

How soon can I drive after a tummy tuck?

Most patients are able to drive again after 1-2 weeks, when they are no longer taking narcotic pain medications.

Can men have tummy tuck surgery?

Yes. Men can absolutely have tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Garazo will discuss your concerns and goals and recommend the ideal tummy tuck technique for you.

Can I sleep on my stomach after a tummy tuck?

No. Patients are advised to sleep on their back with their head and legs elevated for the first several weeks following surgery.

Will a tummy tuck improve my posture?

Yes. By tightening the abdominal muscles, a tummy tuck can lead to improved posture, as these muscles play a key role in supporting the spine.

Can I have a tummy tuck after abdominal surgery?

Previous abdominal surgery does not automatically disqualify you from a tummy tuck. Dr. Garazo will evaluate your surgical history during your consultation to determine the safest and most effective approach for your goals.
