What Is Kybella?

Kybella is a new, minimally invasive injectable option for reducing fullness under the chin without surgery, anesthesia, or excessive downtime—and it is the first and only nonsurgical injectable treatment approved by the FDA to contour and improve the appearance of submental fullness. Kybella is largely composed of a non-human or animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that helps your body absorb and break down fat. When deoxycholic acid is injected into moderate to severe pockets of submental fat, it targets and destroys fat cells, effectively reducing fat and preventing the cells from accumulating or storing fat in the future. When expertly administered, Kybella does not impact surrounding tissues.

Pain-Free Kybella with PRO-NOX™

While many non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments are tolerable to most patients, we want to make sure your experience is as relaxed and comfortable as possible. That’s why we now offer PRO-NOX as an add-on option for your Kybella treatment.

What is PRO-NOX?

Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide helps patients feel calmer during treatment. PRO-NOX is a self-administered system delivering nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mouthpiece, working within seconds. The effects wear off quickly, allowing you to stay in control and return to normal activities shortly after treatment.

Kybella addresses excess fat under the chin, helping to contour the jawline and reduce a "double chin."

Reduced Double Chin

Kybella effectively reduces fat under the chin, leading to a more defined jawline and neck profile.

Permanent Fat Destruction

The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxycholic acid, permanently destroys fat cells in the treatment area, preventing future fat accumulation.

Submental Fullness

Kybella targets moderate to severe submental fullness through precise injections that break down and eliminate fat cells beneath the chin.

Recovery after Kybella treatment is generally straightforward, though temporary swelling beneath the chin is expected as the body begins breaking down treated fat cells. Most patients return to normal activities quickly while following simple aftercare guidelines provided by Dr. Garazo.

Initial Swelling and Tenderness

Swelling under the chin is common and may be noticeable for several days after treatment. Mild tenderness, redness, or bruising may also occur but typically improves as the area heals.

Managing Discomfort

Most patients experience only mild discomfort during recovery. Applying cold compresses and keeping the head elevated can help reduce swelling and improve comfort in the first few days.

Healing and Fat Cell Breakdown

Over the following weeks, the body gradually processes and eliminates the treated fat cells. As swelling subsides, patients begin to notice improved contour and definition beneath the chin.

Returning to Normal Activities

Patients can usually resume normal daily activities shortly after treatment. Strenuous exercise or excessive pressure on the treated area may be avoided for a short period based on Dr. Garazo's guidance.

Kybella offers a non-surgical option for improving the appearance of a double chin and enhancing jawline definition.

Reduces Submental Fat

Kybella targets and destroys fat cells beneath the chin, reducing the appearance of a double chin. As the body gradually clears the treated fat cells, the jawline becomes more defined and the neck contour improves.

Permanent Fat Reduction

Once Kybella destroys fat cells in the treatment area, those cells cannot store fat again. This means the reduction in submental fullness can be long lasting when patients maintain a stable weight.

Non-Surgical Treatment Option

Kybella provides an alternative to surgical procedures such as neck liposuction or neck lift surgery. Because it is an injectable treatment, it avoids incisions, anesthesia, and surgical recovery.

Quick Office-Based Procedure

Kybella treatments are typically completed in about 20 to 30 minutes. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, many patients return to their regular activities shortly after treatment.

Kybella is considered safe when administered by a trained and experienced injector. As with any injectable treatment, side effects can occur. Dr. Garazo reviews all potential risks during your consultation and takes every precaution to minimize complications.

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling beneath the chin is the most common side effect and is a normal part of the treatment process as the body responds to the injected deoxycholic acid. Bruising may also occur at or near the injection sites. Both typically resolve within one to two weeks.

Temporary Numbness or Tingling

Some patients experience reduced sensation or a tingling feeling in the treated area following injection. This is temporary and generally resolves on its own as the tissue heals over the weeks following treatment.

Redness and Tenderness

Mild redness, firmness, or tenderness at the injection sites is common in the days immediately following treatment. These effects are short-lived and can typically be managed with simple aftercare measures recommended by Dr. Garazo.

Rare but Serious Risks

In rare cases, Kybella injections can affect nearby nerves, potentially causing temporary difficulty with facial expressions or swallowing. These effects are uncommon and underscore the importance of receiving treatment from a board-certified physician with extensive injectable experience. Dr. Garazo performs all Kybella treatments himself to ensure precise, safe placement.

KybellaFAQs

How many Kybella treatments are needed?

Most patients need two to four treatments to achieve their desired result, although some individuals may require up to six sessions depending on the amount of fat beneath the chin.

Is Kybella permanent?

Yes. Kybella permanently destroys the fat cells treated beneath the chin. Once these cells are eliminated, they cannot store fat again, although weight gain may affect surrounding tissues.

Is Kybella a substitute for liposuction?

Kybella is best suited for moderate submental fullness. Patients with significant skin laxity or larger fat deposits may benefit more from surgical treatments such as neck liposuction or a neck lift.

How long does swelling last after Kybella?

Swelling is common after treatment and may last several days. In some cases, swelling can persist longer depending on the amount of medication used and individual healing response.
